I did my HND in Constrction full time then got a job and did one day a week to get my BSC (hons) in Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management.

My ex did the same and never got a job in media and has been working for a debt management company for the past 3 years. pretty pointless degree

Yeah I'm 21 at the moment. Would be 22 if I decided to go next year. Thought it might be too old but apparently not haha.

Im going to be applying to Cardiff open uni next year to study network engineering, cisco based. The thought of staying in construction for the rest of my days is depressing!

Of course whatever sector you choose you will likely do it for the rest of your working life unless you decide to retrain but that is the nature of work. You are supposed to get better at something over the years which makes you worth better wages. You should remember though that you can also move up into management. I may be a software engineer now but I am to be a project manager everntually.

As someone else mentioned being a mature student (as I was too) helps a lot. You are much more determined to do well. Most 18 year olds go for the p!ss up and neglect their studies whereas you should be a bit more mature and want to do well. Its never to late to do some learning to better yourself and your career prospects. If you regret going straight into work do something about it.

im lucky i guess cos i did chemistry at uni and i am both good (im natural very anal!) and interested in it. i also grew up on the doorstep of one of the major players in the chemical industry so i pretty much had my career path planned out by the time i was half way through my A levels.

A speciality like that is always going to pay better than a standard network guy but be aware that less specialists are required than general network techs. Not trying to put you off at all mate but if it was me I would work my **** off to make sure I am the best out there to improve your employability compared to the other guys with the same qualification. Specialisms reward hard workers.
