Gym trainers wont leave me alone i agree that free weights are probably best for new people, but machines also help them to develop the natural RoM for the excersise. Also, they can be helpful for those who are not as strong (ex: many new people probably won't be able to do many pullups/chinups so the use of an assisted pullup machine, or lat pulldown will help them)
