so i can make the same muscle-strength gains no matter if i take a long rest or take a short and lift less?

For example today i did 2 sets of chin ups x10 reps.
Did the first one and completed 10 reps.
Took short break and completed only 6 reps at the second.

How does this make me gain pretty much the same as resting for 2+ mins and doing 2 sets of 10 reps?

in for answer, and seems to make progressive overload even more complicated unless tracking rest times between each set as well

The muscles / CNS recover a lot quicker than that. You probably need a lot less rest than you actually think. Shouldn't really take more than a minute unless you have crap cardio or you're doing a big movement like squats.

Powerlifters typically take as long as they need to recover to lift the same or more weight for each set. This usually is between 4 and 7 minutes which is what I do rigt now for maximal strength. For bodybuilders it's a good idea to mix it up between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. if you're not rest pause training 1-2 minutes is good enough. Anymore than that isn't worth it because I've seen multiple studies in which the conclusions have been that for muscle mass the shorter the rest time the better which is why rest pause training is so effective

I take 3-5 minute rest periods on squats/bench.
Everything else is around 60-90 seconds.
