Alright so here's the deal... I know that doing legs is crucial for someone doing a lifting routine, and I have every intention of giving the lower body its fair share of work. The problem is my legs are terrible; I can barely do squats period let alone with the barbell.

Is there any value in starting with dumbbell squats until I get stronger and then progressing to barbell squats?

For the record on leg days I currently have weighted calf raises and squats on my routine.

You need to build up your strength in the squat and perfect your form. Some people just aren't built for squatting biomechanically. Personally I don't back squat because I think it overdevelops the glutes. Deadlifts are good for building your legs, as are lunges.
