Over 500gb often need to be plugged into the mains, it doesn't matter if they're 250gb or 320gb, as long as they are compatable with USB 3.0 I'm sure you don't care about plugging it into the mains

Can I suggest you play this on the TV but through your laptop, see if the movie sound is in sync that way. It may be a sh!t copy you have.

If this works then you need to look at the TV manual, see what file-types it can read. You HDD may be in FAT32, the TV reading only NTFS.

Maybe ..i'm no expert. Just guessing.

Sorry guys, I think you're all on the wrong track regarding the Hard drive. based on what waddy is describing it sounds like the TV is having trouble decoding the video resulting in syncing problems. This is likely due to how the TV handles different video codecs/formats. I'd put money on that if you tried different video formats you'll find that quite a few will handle correctly.

      Things to check..

      1) what format is the video you're trying to play and at what bitrate are they. The higher the bit rate, the more likely to have probs.
      2) Try to play various formats. xvid, mp4's, MKV's at different resolutions and bitrates.
      3) What is the file's sound format? if it's DTS, the TV may be having trouble keeping up rather than with files that have DD5.1 or AC3
