      Actually carbs are important for maintaining muscle mass, too. They're considered "protein sparing" in that, if you're getting enough, your body doesn't break down muscle protein to use as fuel because the carbs are more easily used. So I'd say you're much better off keeping the carbs. You're right that it's a great idea to get plenty of protein, but there is only so much your body can use, so you're better off balancing your diet with fats, carbs, and proteins

      ^ FYI: Dietary fat is more protein sparing than CHO.

      The differential effects of fats and carbohydrates on nitrogen balance, substrate utilization and serum hormone concentrations have been studied.
